The Flaig Award is a prestigious honor presented by the Los Angeles County Bar Association in commemoration of the late Robert B. Flaig. The Flaig Award is presented to an attorney who has exhibited legal excellence in the construction industry and who is highly respected by his or her peers. The Nominating Committee for the Flaig Award lists these criteria for assessing potential candidates:
- Achievement of personal and legal excellence as a construction lawyer
- Ethical, honest, and enthusiastic practice of construction law
- Teaches other construction lawyers, directly and by example
- Gives time, talents, and means to the community; and
- Demonstrates leadership among members of the Construction Law Bar and Construction Industry Organizations
On Thursday, May 22nd, the 2025 Flaig Award will be presented to Dale A. Ortmann, co-founder of Hunt Ortmann Palffy Nieves Darling & Mah, in recognition of his many achievements in construction law. John Darling of Hunt Ortmann will be presenting the award. Dale is the second Hunt Ortmann attorney to be presented the Flaig Award, which was bestowed to Hunt Ortmann co-founder, and past Chair of the Construction Law Subsection, Gordon Hunt, in 2013.

The Los Angeles County Bar Association will also be presenting the Acret Award, which is a prestigious honor presented in commemoration of the late James Acret, the best-known and most prolific author of books and articles on California Construction Law. The Acret Award is presented to individuals who have made a singular contribution to the field of construction law legal writing.
The 2025 Acret Award will be presented to William D. Locher of the law firm Gibbs Giden Locher Turner Senet & Wittbrodt. Kenneth C. Gibbs of JAMS and Glenn E. Turner, III of Gibbs Giden will be presenting the award.
Michael J. Bayard of Construction ADR Services will be serving as Host and MC.
This year’s Annual Update portion of the program will be led by the Construction Law Group from Cozen O’Connor and Patricia Wolfe of Hunt Ortmann. The program will cover new developments in California Construction and Construction Insurance Law in 2024. The handout materials from this program are considered a “must have” for anyone who practices in the construction law area.
